If they say, “Yes” then smile and say:

“Fantastic, thanks”

“Great, thanks”

“Hey, thanks, that’s cool”

“Thanks, you can join in my games when you want”

Practise saying those with your family and then try them out at school. Pick your favourite three to try out each week, and tell your parents or teacher what happened. So get going. Three cheers for you. Hip hip, hurrah! Hip hip, hurrah! Hip hip hurrah! You know what? You’re getting louder.

Every kid in the whole world will one day be told, “No, you can’t play; we don’t need any one else.” Did you know that? ‘Did you know that it’s not just you who has had that answer? Well it’s true. We promise you. It happens to everyone.

Most kids feel disappointed when they hear, “No, you can’t play; we don’t need anyone else.” When some kids (and adults) are disappointed, they get angry or sad and they want to get even. It’s like they’ve swallowed a lump of nastiness, and they want to hurt the people who said “No!” They want them to know what it’s like to feel angry or sad. But do you know what? That’s actually not a smart idea, because the kids will say, “Who wants to play with such a grumpy grouch? We’re glad we said ‘No!’” They’ll think they were right, and that you deserve to be left out.

But do you know what will help when the kids won’t let you join in? Being tough. Not nasty, mean tough, but smart, happy tough, like a turtle. That means growing a shell, so that nasty things bounce off and they don’t hurt your heart. To become smart, happy tough, you need to learn these 5 tricks:

Trick What to say

Trick What to do

Trick What you DON’T say

Trick What you DON’T do

Trick How to do Supa Thinkin (you’ll hear a lot more about this little fella, but if you can’t wait, go to page 68)
